Resource Provision Y1 - Butterflies 2025 - 2026

Mrs O'Hara Butterflies

Mrs O'Hara Butterflies

Hi! I am Roisin and I have been working at Woodlands Primary School for twelve years now. After many years teaching at Woodlands, I am excited to be taking on this new role in Butterflies.

When I am not in school, I am usually reading a good book on my kindle with a coffee and cake, playing with my one-year-old baby girl, Heidi, or doing some shopping at Cheshire Oaks! I also like to spend as much time as I can visiting my family and friends.

I am very excited to be your new teacher and cannot wait to have lots of fun learning together and helping you to blossom into the best you can be!

Welcome to Butterflies.

Butterflies is a resourced provision class for Year 1 aged children with an environment that primarily focuses on early communication and interaction skills.  Children in Butterflies follow the same themes as our mainstream Year 1 classes, with their learning personalised to meet their individual needs and continue their progression from Reception, whether that was in our Acorns class or elsewhere. Most of the activities are child led, with a focus on their individual targets outlined in the child’s EHCP. Adults will also lead on other activities that are planned to ensure development and progression across key areas of learning.

We have a beautiful classroom for Butterflies and a fabulous outdoor learning environment that the children access regularly throughout the day.

Within our classroom, staff ensure the children have access to resources and activities throughout the school day that are carefully chosen to engage the children in their learning, which reflect their interests, and in doing so, meet the needs of each unique child. Each week there will be some phonics, maths and literacy activities, opportunities to learn about the world, music, art and ‘messy play’.

Each area of learning within Butterflies has been designed and developed to promote opportunities for social and communication interactions to develop early communication skills. The experienced adults in the room consistently model to the children, using visuals, simple language and objects of reference to move children’s learning forward. Resources are carefully placed to support and develop children’s communication skills as they work with adults or as the child works independently.

Within Butterflies, we also offer an environment and resources that provide opportunities for emotional regulation, such as our cushion corner, with bean bags, blankets and cushions, and our sensory toys. Within our classroom, adults use visuals, simple language and objects of reference to develop and support children’s early social communication and emotional regulation needs. The space can be used to support co regulation to meet children’s sensory needs so they are therefore ready to learn.

Our theme for the Spring term is ‘Our School’. This theme will be the golden thread running through all subjects within our Woodlands sensory curriculum, providing meaningful, consistent and engaging learning experiences for our children.

By focusing on familiar places, people and routines, children will be supported to develop confidence, communication and independence in a safe and predictable way. Learning will be rooted in real-life experiences and delivered through sensory-rich, practical activities that are carefully adapted to meet individual needs.

Throughout the term, children will explore different aspects of school life, helping them to build understanding of their environment and a sense of belonging within the school community. Repetition, structure and sensory exploration will be used to support engagement, regulation and progress across all areas of learning.

Our aim is to provide an inclusive and nurturing curriculum that supports every child’s development, celebrates individual achievements and ensures learning is accessible, purposeful and enjoyable.

Our Core Word Programme will continue throughout the Spring term to support our English curriculum and Speech and Language Therapy outcomes. Each week, children focus on one core word, taught through structured, repeated and engaging sessions to support understanding, expressive communication and functional language use across a range of contexts.

This approach helps to develop early communication, confidence and attention skills, while supporting each child’s individual communication needs using speech, signs and visual supports.

A new core word and sign are introduced every Monday, with a ‘How to help at home’ guide shared with families and uploaded to SeeSaw. The Friday newsletter will also share the core word for the following week to support consistency between home and school.
