Resource Provision Y1 - Butterflies 2025 - 2026

Mrs Dixon

Hi, I'm Kristina, and this is my third year at Woodlands. I have worked with children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) for over 15 years and am passionate about helping every child reach their full potential.

I also have a 10-year-old autistic daughter called Orla, which has given me valuable personal experience and understanding. When I'm not at work, I enjoy reading, going on holiday, and taking my dogs to the beach.

I am so happy to be your teacher and can't wait for all the fun we will have learning together this year!

Welcome to Butterflies.

Butterflies is a resourced provision class for Year 1 aged children with an environment that primarily focuses on early communication and interaction skills. Children in Butterflies follow the same themes as our other RP classes, with their learning personalised to meet their individual needs and continue their progression from Reception, whether that was in our Acorns class or elsewhere. Most of the activities are child led, with a focus on their individual targets outlined in the child’s EHCP. Adults will also lead on other activities that are planned to ensure development and progression across key areas of learning.

We have a beautiful classroom for Butterflies and a fabulous outdoor learning environment that the children access regularly throughout the day.

Within our classroom, staff ensure the children have access to resources and activities throughout the school day that are carefully chosen to engage the children in their learning, which reflect their interests, and in doing so, meet the needs of each unique child. Each week there will be some phonics, maths and literacy activities, opportunities to learn about the world, music, art and ‘messy play’.

Each area of learning within Butterflies has been designed and developed to promote opportunities for social and communication interactions to develop early communication skills. The experienced adults in the room consistently model to the children, using visuals, simple language and objects of reference to move children’s learning forward. Resources are carefully placed to support and develop children’s communication skills as they work with adults or as the child works independently.

Within Butterflies, we also offer an environment and resources that provide opportunities for emotional regulation, such as our cushion corner, with bean bags, blankets and cushions, and our sensory toys. Within our classroom, adults use visuals, simple language and objects of reference to develop and support children’s early social communication and emotional regulation needs. The space can be used to support co regulation to meet children’s sensory needs so they are therefore ready to learn.

This term, our learning is centred around Weather & Seasons, with all subjects linked to this exciting theme through our sensory curriculum.

English

Children will explore a range of weather-themed sensory stories, books, rhymes, including What is the Weather? and The Sun and the Cloud. They will develop their communication, reading, and writing skills through story exploration, core word activities, mark making, widgit symbols, signing, and weather-themed crafts.

Mathematics

In Maths, children will focus on measurement and length and 2D and 3D shapes. Through practical and sensory activities, they will develop skills in matching, sorting, measuring, counting, comparing, shape recognition, and problem-solving.

Science

Children will investigate different types of weather, the changing seasons, and plants. They will take part in sensory investigations, plant seeds, explore natural materials, learn about the needs of plants, and observe seasonal changes in the environment.

Geography

Our Geography learning will focus on weather, seasons, and water. Children will explore different weather conditions, investigate wet and dry environments, learn about appropriate clothing for different types of weather, and observe how weather affects our daily lives.

Design Technology and Food Technology

Children will explore a variety of tastes, textures, smells, and ingredients while making simple sweet and savoury snacks. They will also take part in practical activities that develop their independence, fine motor skills, and understanding of food preparation.

Art and Design

Throughout the term, children will create a range of weather-themed artwork using different materials, colours, textures, and techniques. They will have opportunities to explore sensory art experiences and express their creativity through a variety of media.

PSHE

Children will develop important social skills including sharing, turn-taking, cooperation, and building positive relationships. Through structured activities and play, they will learn to work alongside others and communicate their needs and feelings.

Physical Education (PE)

In PE, children will focus on athletics, developing skills such as running, jumping, balancing, throwing, and coordination. They will also take part in sensory circuits and physical activities that support regulation, movement, and physical development.

Computing

Children will use interactive songs, videos, and learning activities to support their understanding of weather, seasons, shape, number, plants, and communication. Technology will be used to reinforce learning across the curriculum in an engaging and accessible way.

Throughout the term, learning will be practical, sensory, and personalised to support every child to engage, explore, communicate, and develop new skills while enjoying our Weather & Seasons theme ☀️🌦️🌈🌻🍃❄️😊

Our Core Word Programme will continue throughout the Summer term to support our English curriculum and Speech and Language Therapy outcomes. Each week, children focus on one core word, taught through structured, repeated and engaging sessions to support understanding, expressive communication and functional language use across a range of contexts.

This approach helps to develop early communication, confidence and attention skills, while supporting each child’s individual communication needs using speech, signs and visual supports.

A new core word and sign are introduced every Monday, with a ‘How to help at home’ guide shared with families and uploaded to SeeSaw. The Friday newsletter will also share the core word for the following week to support consistency between home and school.
