PSHE

🌿 PSHE at Woodlands Primary School

At Woodlands Primary School, PSHE is an important part of our curriculum and school life.

What is PSHE?

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education helps children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy and independent lives.

At Woodlands Primary School, PSHE supports children to:

  • understand their feelings and emotions

  • build positive relationships

  • stay safe and healthy

  • develop confidence and independence

How do we teach PSHE?

PSHE is delivered through a range of experiences across school, including:

  • Commando Joe’s – building resilience, teamwork and character

  • Project Evolve – teaching online safety and responsible use of technology

  • Picture News – exploring real-world events in an age-appropriate way

  • Assemblies – reinforcing key themes and shared values

  • Trips and visits – providing real-life learning experiences

  • Our behaviour approach: Ready, Respectful, Safe – supporting children to make positive choices every day

  • Daily school life – children apply PSHE skills through routines, behaviour and interactions

PSHE is also developed through cross-curricular links, where opportunities arise naturally across subjects to discuss relationships, wellbeing, safety and life skills.

What do children learn?

Our PSHE curriculum focuses on three key areas:

Relationships

  • friendships and kindness

  • families and people who care for us

  • respecting others and keeping safe

Health and Wellbeing

  • physical health and self-care

  • mental health and emotions

  • healthy lifestyles

Living in the Wider World

  • belonging to a community

  • money and work

  • understanding the wider world

Online Safety

Online safety is an important part of our PSHE curriculum and is taught through Project Evolve.

Children learn:

  • how to stay safe online

  • how to report concerns

  • how to use technology responsibly

Our Approach

At Woodlands, we create a safe and supportive environment where children feel confident to:

  • share their ideas

  • ask questions

  • reflect on their learning

We use discussion, role play and real-life scenarios to make learning meaningful and relevant.

Developing the Whole Child

Through PSHE, we support children to become:

  • confident individuals

  • respectful members of the school community

  • responsible and thoughtful citizens

PSHE in Action

Children at Woodlands develop their PSHE skills every day through learning, play and interaction with others.

Developing Our PSHE Curriculum

From Summer term, we will be further strengthening our PSHE provision through the PSHE Association Programme of Study, ensuring clear progression of knowledge and skills across all year groups.
